I was sitting on the roof deck and heard a hawk sound nearby and then spotted this one up on the neighbouring cellphone tower. It stayed there quite a while so I got my camera and bird book. I think it is a female Merlin but the experts may know better.

What a great catch. Just look at those talons. I think he might be ready to grab something to eat.
ReplyDeleteIt is a real treat to see a hawk, especially when it is comfortable surveying its environment. This hawk could be a Merlin, or a Sharp Shin hawk. Merlins have dark eyes and are smaller, about the size of a Robin. You got a great portrait of this bird.
ReplyDeleteWe’ll call you Hawkeye.
ReplyDeleteHello :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a super capture. It's a hawk alright, and it does resemble a Merlin. It's not a bird you see every day, and I would be ecstatic if I had photographed this raptor.:)
All the best
Sonjia.
Surveying the hood for a meal. Great capture!
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat sighting. I have trouble with the ID of hawks and I've never seen a Merlin but this bird is beautiful...so upright!
ReplyDeleteLove Hawks we have them here, they are great for cleaning up the roads.
ReplyDeleteMerlin. I've not heard of a merlin. It looks to be a decent size.
ReplyDeleteWow and that near you. Great capture.
