This is yet another of the murals from the Islington area of the city and this one was also done by John Kuna. The scene depicts the remains of a mill pond which became a favourite swimming hole for generations of the area's residents as it would have been in the 1920s.The swimwear featured comes from actual swimwear designs of the time - surprisingly risque don't you think?

Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteKuna is incredibly prolific. Are his murals private commissions or public? This one seems to be a slightly different style than others you've shown us. Maybe a wider range of colors or more subtle shading in the forms? Maybe its just all the buff guys and busty women. Whatever it is , it's fun to look at. Thanks for contributing to Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteActually, I WAS thinking risque! I thought they women covered themselves up more than that.
ReplyDeleteall that clinging material! it looks a bit more tight fitting than I would have thought.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea the swimwear could be so interesting and colourful in that time, I thought they were all very similar, dull, black or navy blue. ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreat mural. The swimwear appears to be daring, but also progressive is the idea of men and women bathing together!
ReplyDeleteRe your risque comment: Sometimes more is less! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful mural, but I'd guess it's a bit of an exaggeration...but maybe not. Love the colors and that depiction of the woods in the background.
Always look forward to your Monday mural, this one is another excellent find. I think the woman in the middle has discovered that water plus some materials can equal transparency! No wonder the gentleman is rushing up with a blanket.
ReplyDeleteAt least the swimwear is better than what the people were wearing in my mural.
ReplyDeleteSummertime and the livin' is easy...
ReplyDeleteincredible. i really like murals that shows a scene or a snippet of daily living. love it.

This is a wonderful mural!
ReplyDeletethe roaring 20s in bathers, eh!
ReplyDeleteLove it - I agree - fascinating swimwear.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite risque! This is a really nice mural. Very realistic and nice colors. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing piece of art.
ReplyDeleteLove the "bathing costumes". There s something very 3 D about this mural. I really enjoyed seeing it!
ReplyDeletegreat mural artwork :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful mural. This artist is very talented. Such a bright addition to the street.
ReplyDeleteAndy is right, better wear these than the outfits in his mural this week. It seems to me that these suits are not as risque as the way Kuna has the fabric cling so revealingly to the bodies, and that may include a bit of artist's license. I also agree with Oakland DP that I'd not have guessed this to be the same artist you've shown before. I like it.
ReplyDeleteJust a fantastic work! Well found!
ReplyDeleteIt's a fantastic piece of art Pat,I think the 'roaring 20's' were altogether rather risque!!
ReplyDeleteYour Islington looks just as nice as my Islington! Great artwork!
