Gelber Bros Ghost Sign

This ghost sign is found on the side of a 1920s building on Richmond St W, the building having been built as a warehouse for Gelber Brothers Wholesale Woollens & Yard Goods.  Apparently it has been covered at various times through the years by billboards which may account for its fairly legible state! The building now houses several small businesses as well as a nightclub that has a rooftop patio that we can't see from the ground.

If you are in York next year it might be fun to meet up if you have the time.

  4. You may know how much I love these faded old signs. We find a lot of them in Colorado when we visit out daughter. And I always take photos of them. Nice to know the history, too, as it makes the photo much more meaningful.

  7. I always look for these when I'm in a city. Locally we don't have anything like it, not least reason being that we don't have big brick buildings!

  11. This is great - I took a photo of this sign a couple of years ago (when the building was undergoing renovations) and I thought it might disappear. Am so glad it looks pretty much the same!

  12. What a wonderful ghost sign. Most of the ones I see are far less legible!

I agree with Deb about those windows - along with the beautiful brick and sign, the windows are striking!
