Joy Oil Co Gas Station
There used to be several of these quirky gas stations around town but this one, which was located at Lakeshore & Windermere, was the last one left standing. Built in 1937, it was moved across the road in 2007 to a location by the Martin Goodman Trail and was totally restored and is meant to become an info centre but so far it remains empty & fenced in. All of the Joy stations had the look of little French chateaus with cute little towers and wonderful detailing.

ReplyDeleteYou're right, as a gas station it's quirky, but as an info station I think it's just about right! Nice find.
ReplyDeleteHow cute. I think it's too bad that these kinds of things have been pushed out by bland boxes selling just about everything but gas!
ReplyDeleteI remember this station and other Joy stations when they sold gas. They are from a day when there used be competition in the sale of gasoline. I'm glad to see that the building has been preserved.
ReplyDeleteAt least it was saved, the history of the architecture must be fascinating, what was corporate thinking :-).
ReplyDeleteInteresting design for a gas station.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Paul in Powell River!
ReplyDeleteI don't recognize this chain of gas stations, but like the others, I think it would be a fine information center.
ReplyDeleteIt's a magical looking little place, looks like it belongs in a theme park!
ReplyDeleteit is such a shame that this structure is behind a chain link fence after all the work that went into restoring it. I have often thought it would make a nice ice cream stand.
ReplyDeleteI hope it really will be used!
ReplyDeleteWow! Now that is some grand petrol station! Hoep they get to repurpose it soon.
ReplyDeleteI've passed by it before it was moved, so I remember it. It's an interesting building!
