Deco Grillwork
In 1928 the Simpson's Department store downtown planned a 20 storey tower addition to their Yonge St store but only 9 storeys of the Deco tower were ever built. Some lovely features were included in the design such as this fabulous grillwork on what is now the back of the Hudson's Bay store. The grillwork matches that to be found on the former Simpson's store in Montreal.

ReplyDeleteVery ornate and intricate, love the lamps too!
ReplyDeleteI believe I've shopped in that store but, sorry to say I missed this lovely grillwork.
ReplyDeleteLove the work on the awning as well, and funny how it is not the back, what a shame not to be a focal point.
ReplyDeleteNice shot! You've framed it well.
ReplyDeleteDo they do art deco window washing up there, RedPat?
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice find.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo of a fine architectural detail. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Wonder why the 20 story tower wasn't built...
ReplyDeleteDoes this grill work drop down to secure the premises at night...kinda looks that way.
Well spotted Pat, nine storeys of Art Deco design are better than none oui!
ReplyDeleteThey would never the the time on this today. Get it up fast, no frills make $$$$$$.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the decoration has some significance.
