"Bring Round The Car"
This is the little telephone room in Spadina House which is now a museum that has been restored to its condition from the early 1900s. I showed you the exterior here last year. Seeing these old phones really makes you realize how far technology has come in the last 100 years. The large phone was used to call downtown Toronto while the smaller one was a direct line to the chauffeur!
... and the sounds that they brought forth. So much more classier than cells of today.
ReplyDeletereally cool! these days, we'd just text. :)
ReplyDeletePhones really are such a visible sign of progress aren't they. Great fun!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of having two phones side-by-side, for different purposes. Thanks for an interesting post.
ReplyDeleteMy parents had one quite like that one on the right in the house where I grew up. It never worked, mind you, but it was a terrific decoration.
ReplyDeleteOh my, communication has come a very long way.
ReplyDeleteI remember using a phone like these in my grandmother's farmhouse in northern Minnesota! It was a party line, too, and you could hear the neighbors picking up when you started talking. Not many secrets in that area! That would be back in the early 40s.
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference a hundred years or so has made. Folks back in those days must have thought this a marvel. I wonder what they would make of our modern technology.
ReplyDeleteI love old phones and this photo. I think phones of this vintage were once called "the blower," now sure why.
ReplyDeleteWhere is my line to the hired help, this reminds me...
ReplyDeleteThese are great!
ReplyDeleteI can smell the nostalgia, fantastic shot!
ReplyDeleteSomehow things seemed much more elegant in those days Pat, but I think that may just be a 'romantic notion' oui!
ReplyDeleteI bet the battery was huge...
ReplyDeleteHa! The direct line to the chauffeur? NICE! :))
