He Xie is the Chinese word for river crab and this piece of Ai Weiwei's consists of 3,200 porcelain crabs. After his Shanghai studio was demolished by Chinese authorities in 2010, Ai invited guests to a feast of 10,000 river crabs to protest the control of information and the restriction of individual freedom of expression. He was placed under house arrest and was unable to attend.
I'd be a little crabby, too, if my studio was demolished! Wow. That's a lot of crabs. Weiwei's installations could not be called "minimal." :)
ReplyDeleteI give thanks for being able to express myself freely, Pat. I like the exposure.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend :))
a good protest.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting installation.
ReplyDeleteHis work speaks loudly.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is on the "meh" side of the equation.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful collection of pieces to explore. I'm not overfond of these crabs but his work does a good job of highlighting issues.
ReplyDeleteHe is controversial but I love this way of protesting!
ReplyDeleteSuch an amazing story to go with this installation.
ReplyDeleteKinda spooky to my way of thinking.
ReplyDeleteGosh he really is a politically minded artist Pat.. it's good, art with powerful meaning is to be admired.
ReplyDeleteMy very first introduction to Ai Wei Wei was his sunflower seed exposition. This looks like the same concept. I just love it - again thank you for bringing these to us.
