Lucky Moose
In 2000, more than 300 moose sculptures were decorated by different artists and they roamed all over the city. Unfortunately the antlers were relatively easy to remove and most of the moose lost their antlers shortly after the sculptures appeared. You can still find the moose scattered about but very few have the antlers like this lucky moose found up above the storefront of the "Lucky Moose Food Mart" in one of our Chinatowns, this one located on Dundas St W. This lucky moose is decorated with gold coins, the yin & yang symbols, and the chinese word for luck written upside down to signify that the luck has already arrived!

That must have been the last time I was in Toronto because I remember seeing the moose all over town.

The moose's "superior" location would seem to have been instrumental in keeping its antlers intact.

first we had cows, then snails, and now moose. This one has to be the cutest. Very festive and colorful.
ReplyDeleteHow sad that people would steal the antlers! Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this whole idea of a number of decorated sculptures, be it moose, pigs, snails, etc., originated in Chicago with the cow statues everywhere. This moose looks great up high! He IS lucky to keep his antlers!

ReplyDeleteHe is a fine specimen. I remember driving around looking for all these moose and being saddened when seeing one that been desecrated.
ReplyDeleteI've seen painted ducks in Eugene Oregon, horses in Louisville KY, cows somewhere, I forget...but never moose. Looks like this one was lucky to be put up high.

How funny. And strange. Lucky Moose Food Mart has go to be unique! We have horses all over Ocala and one day "they" put up a horse in the downtown square with real quarters all over it - signifying, I guess, a "quarter" horse. Well, the quarters didn't last long and neither did the horse.

ReplyDeleteEurope went through a phase of showcasing full-size coloured cows; I think mouses (or mice?) look much better!
