Broken Tree
I finally ventured out to check on the tree damage in the park and it was sad to see this wonderful old Silver Maple had lost so many large limbs in the ice storm. It's hard to believe what the weight of ice would have to be to pull down such strong branches. Luckily it seems that none of the park furniture or playground equipment were hit by damaging branches.
Many in Maine will be out of power well into 2014 they say. Lost power in '96 for 9 days NOT fun!

ReplyDeleteI once saw an early snow storm in Denver when all the trees still had their leaves and the weight of the snow on those branches with full foliage started snapping all over town. I was surprised by the amount of damage. We think of trees as so strong. We even hand swings from them.

ReplyDeleteNearly sixteen years later you can still see signs of the ice storm of 1998 in eastern Ontario.
That poor tree will be trimmed and look good in another year or two. Glad you survived the ice storm.

ReplyDeleteAmazing sight. Ice is very heavy, I guess. We got ice storms in Dallas but not here in this part of Florida. No fun. The tree looks OK, basically; that's a good thing.

ReplyDeleteIce is very, very heavy. This looks like the damage done by the October storm in 2011 in New England. If it is any solace, most of the trees will survive after the damaged limbs are taken off and will begin the process of healing themselves. We are practically back to normal only two years later.

ReplyDeleteThis reminds «Louis» of New Year's eve 1999 in Paris. A huge windstorm swept across France from the Atlantic and downed thousands upon thousands of trees across the country. «Louis» remembers seeing one huge old tree that had toppled, its root structure having been pulled out of the ground! Atop the roots was a now air-borne Renault that had been in the parking lot above the root cluster, now riding in the air on the roots!
Terrible, what a mess. Hopefully no one got injured.
