This is the "First Church of Christ, Scientist" which is found on St George St in the Annex neighbourhood. The church was founded in Toronto in 1889 and this building, designed by Chicago architect Solon S Beman, was built in 1916. I have passed this church hundreds of times and never dreamt that it was that old - it is always meticulously maintained and looks as clean as if it was built 6 months ago. I would love to see the inside!

It has a modes look with just touches of classical. I like it.
ReplyDeletereally neat! as you said, would never have guessed its age!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a court house or bank.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, Pat - like you, «Louis» never would guess that the building is that old. Its design is typical of many Church of Christ, Scientist churches «Louis» has seen.
ReplyDeleteThe Church of the Nativity is «Louis'» inSPIREd Sunday post this week. This happens to be the parish attended by "Dr. Mc" of The Friday Funnies fame.
Beautiful! Like you I would have never guessed it that old.
ReplyDeleteMy first reaction was "That's a church?" Looks more like a museum. But when you said it was a Christian Scientist building, it made sense. Their churches seldom look like what we consider "traditional" churches.
ReplyDeleteI would never have thought that this is a church!
ReplyDeletei agree with you there - i would think it was much newer - it has a bank look to it. or similar to the "Lincoln Memorial" was my 1st thought. ( :
ReplyDeleteLooks more like a library.
ReplyDeleteIt's similar to the style of one that's here. I've been inside that one for Doors Open. It's different inside than mainstream churches as well. Fortunately at least for that event, no one was trying to recruit. Always a concern with a sect like that...
ReplyDeleteIt is a handsome building. The Christian Scientists have a relatively new church in Olde Naples. If you go inside yours and show some photos, I'll do the same down here.
ReplyDeleteIt is really very good to look. Unless you have told it's age people will never know by looking at it's appearance.
ReplyDeleteIt really is an interesting design for a church Pat, it must be cherished by its congregation, they look after it so well.. Jack's comment made me smile :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a very grand looking building, and looks even grander against that beautiful sky!
ReplyDeleteI never would have guessed it was a church. It is a handsome building.
ReplyDeleteNot the traditional look of a church.
ReplyDeletePat enters, and teach us ;)
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize it was that old either. Love to go in also/
