"The Chorus"
I found this sculpture of bronze, life-size figures outside a gallery in Yorkville and even though it was a sunny (but cold) day I found it to be a very dark piece. The artist, Sylvia Lefkovitz, made castings of this piece in several sizes and this one had originally been installed at a commercial site in Montreal in the 1960s.
Frozen... in mid-tune?
ReplyDeleteneat and just a little bit scary. :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love this. It's sad and happy at the same time if that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteIt's well done but I'm not sure what it means. I'm going to check out the artist.
ReplyDeleteA very interesting sculpture. I reminds me or Rodin.
ReplyDeleteIt does seem a little intense Pat, would love to know more about it.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find anything more about "The Chorus" other than the following: "The massive five-figure bronze "Chorus" was a Montreal landmark for years, standing above the entrance to the Mies van der Rohe Westmount Square Complex."
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a sculpture at the Rodin Museum in Paris.
ReplyDeleteI think the meaning may be "open you arms and see the world!"
Maybe?
I like the last monk, he doesn't seem to want to conform!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Greek plays and chorus.
ReplyDeleteIt's got a very grave quality indeed and makes me want to know more about it.
ReplyDeleteStunning piece of work.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this before. It's quite an unusual sculpture!
ReplyDeleteMagnifique photo!
ReplyDeleteC'est un très joli post!
Bonne semaine à toi! Cath.
It does look very haunting, but I like it!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI like the way he turns his head slowly!!
ReplyDeleteNice RedPat. I can't decide whether Toronto or Perth has more public art.
ReplyDeleteYes haunting, but fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThis artist did many works inspired by Biblical references and Ancient Greece. This could be oracles or inspired for example by a reference to God’s Grace represented by the number five. Notice one of the five is looking in a different direction. Maybe it’s not as dark as you think.
ReplyDeleteThis artist now has a Wikipedia page, which includes an explanation on the Chorus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Lefkovitz
