This fence is the type of fence required by the city to protect trees during construction or renovation of a home. It marks off a Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) around the tree where there are to be no grade changes, no storage of materials, no hard surfacing, and no vehicle parking. The city also requires that a deposit of around $5,000 be put down that will be returned if the tree is unharmed at the end of the work. If the tree dies you forfeit the money and you also must plant new trees in its place. This one was spotted in the Annex neighbourhood where the homes in this pic sell for a few million dollars each!

The city requires a deposit, that's a good thing !
ReplyDeleteWow, are these homes really so expensive?
As a lover of trees I like this idea Pat, people are often unaware of the damage they can do.
ReplyDeleteSure is goes without saying, very important! I believe we call them Row Houses here, and they are just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteTruly important!
ReplyDeleteWow - nice to see the trees being treated so well!
ReplyDeleteCan't fool me. Those fences are there so the trees don't escape.
ReplyDeleteNow that truly lives up to the name "good fence". This sounds like a brilliant way to protect the trees in the inner city.
ReplyDeleteA very important fence indeed! I wish we would use it here!
ReplyDeleteoh, that's an awesome program they've got going! thanks for linking when you have a chance!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea of the payment for protection of the tree. I have always noticed these fencing around the trees. Thanks on the info!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat's 5k hen you're house cost several million? Seriously, this is a great idea...it's hard to replace grown-up trees and their benefits!
ReplyDeleteSome serious measures there.
ReplyDeleteYay Toronto!

a great fences to protect trees
ReplyDeletevery interesting post about why the fence is there.
ReplyDeleteI think it is wonderful the trees are so protected.. Great idea. Wonderful fence photo, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteWow! Just WOW! 5000 is a lotta lotta money for a tree. I love trees, but I have never seen anything like this.
ReplyDeleteThat was interesting to read about. I believe I saw some trees here protected that way when they put in a new street a few blocks away. That's a pretty steep fee for harming the tree.
ReplyDeleteDon't think we do that here - but a great idea. I wonder if it would protect the roots though, as they would seem the most vulnerable part.
ReplyDeleteGood for the city for protecting the trees like that. We have strict tree ordinances here too. Those homes are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting. I admire the way Toronto protects mature trees. Way to go, Toronto.
ReplyDeleteA very important fence indeed!! and smart thinking about the deposit too.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a a good idea to me. There is no way that would happen here in the Tea Party capital of the US.
ReplyDeleteSo wonderful that they protect the trees.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very well protected tree!
ReplyDeleteIs better protected Pat ;)
ReplyDeleteNo shortage of red tape in T.O. The same colour of tape can found in Pickering with less strings attached.
ReplyDeleteHmm, mighty pricey area.
ReplyDeleteSome fence for sure.
I'm very impressed that Toronto takes it's trees and green spaces seriously!
ReplyDeleteA few million a piece? Really? What a deal! Tom The Backroads Traveller
