The African art gallery at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is one of my favourite areas. The collection of African pieces is the largest in Canada with 95 pieces, almost all of them donated by Dr Murray Frum. They are located in their own dedicated gallery which was designed by architects Brigitte Shim & Howard Sutcliffe and it is a wonderful space. These 2 pieces are from Nigeria and of course the one in the middle is from Toronto!

ReplyDeleteWhen African art is good, it's VERY good. I love it! For obvious reasons, Portugal has some amazing collections, wether public or private.
ReplyDeleteBut...
If you care for African art, you should have seen a market where I've been at Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast, right before civil war. Imagine a road sided by all kinds of art from neighbouring countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana or Sierra Leone, for more than 1 Km... and no tourists! :-) AMAZING!
...and there you are, hello! What a great place to explore too!

ReplyDeleteCool reflection. I once worked for Warren Robbins who founded the Museum of African Art in Washington, DC. He wrote articles explaining how African art influenced Picasso and other artists.
