Redevelopment
This building on College St was built in 1910 as Latvian House, a cultural centre for the Latvian community in the city. The community outgrew the building years ago and a new centre was built and this became mostly office space for several years. It was sold to developers a while ago and plans are afoot to construct a 3 storey commercial building here but since this Classical Revival building has heritage listing its facade will be retained as part of the new development. We will have to wait and see how it looks. On the far bottom right you can see an actual phone booth still standing.
Hopefully it turns out great in the end.
ReplyDeleteYou will have to show us how it looks when it's done. I'm glad you pointed out that phone booth. I would have missed it. Rare indeed!
ReplyDeletei like it!
ReplyDeletegreat building it should be renovated
ReplyDeleteI hope this beautiful building will have soon a new life...
ReplyDeleteMaintaining the façade... it can be a shame if the rest is torn down.
ReplyDeleteAll our booths are gone, although I saw two free standing pay phones the other day in a building.
ReplyDeleteAnother building saved from developers.
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased at least the facade will be preserved, to many disappearing these days...
ReplyDeleteA neat building to see revitalized. You actually still have phone booths?
ReplyDeleteI love the columns.
ReplyDeleteIt does look quite 'imperious' and well worth preserving!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh, so that's the Latvian House! The newer Latvian Centre is a LOT bigger. :) It'll be interesting to see how they incorporate this building into the new structure and what they'll use it for.
ReplyDeleteGlad they'll keep it, it's beautiful. Funny that I never think of Latvian communities!
ReplyDeleteYou've just reminded me that I wanted to start photographing the remaining phone booths!
What a beauty! Tom The Backroads Traveller
ReplyDeleteI hope they honor this old building. The facade is so beautiful, it would be a shame to lose it.
ReplyDeleteIf they do it up there the way it is done down here, the innards will be gutted, leaving only the shell, and all will be new inside and up above. Sometimes it comes out fine, but I wonder if we achieve much.
