I don't think I have ever seen a butterfly here in March before but I spotted this one on Mar 29 as it fluttered around on the south-facing hill leading up to Casa Loma and then it settled onto this warm rock for quite awhile. It is a Mourning Cloak Butterfly and some of them are thought to winter over here. This poor thing is looking rather bedraggled and we had snow this week so it probably isn't very happy.

ReplyDeleteLike all of us, that butterfly was looking for some spring warmth. Beautiful shot.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pleasant surprise. Too bad for her/him that the the cold temperatures returned.
ReplyDeleteNot a good timing, but I wish the butterfly well...

ReplyDeleteBlack butterflies are quite rare, right?
ReplyDeleteNice capture, Pat !
Well with the warmish winter the little fellow must be a bit troubled as are lots of birds and insects. I've been seeing a lot of bumble bees. Weird. I hope he made it, he's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteQuite distinctive. Hopefully it's found a warm spot to wait out the cooler temperatures.
ReplyDeleteSpotted my first butterfly, a Tiger Swallowtail, this past week too. It also snowed this morning. :-)

The dark colored butterfly almost looks like a sundial, in some sense.

It is aptly named. I've never seen such a black butterfly before, I don't think we have those here.
