Milkweed

I spotted this sign in a city maintained garden recently. There is a push on here to plant more milkweed in order to help the Monarch Butterflies that depend on it for food but it is sometimes difficult to find it at the garden centres so it seems that some of the city plants must have been disappearing!

  5. This is a great sign. Someone cares about the monarchs. Over the years we have seen fewer of them, especially in the fall when they migrate through here.

  6. Hopefully those that are stealing it are at least replanting it somewhere. The nurseries better get a bigger supply.

  14. Don’t think I would recognize a full grown milkweed plant but I do have a pretty butterfly weed plant nearby and it is quite common in my neck of the woods.

  21. Yes! I have visited some butterfly gardens in recent years and learned how important milkweed is to sustaining butterflies. You are making me think that I need to find a space in my own garden to plant a milkweed plant.
