Joining Together

This is the Anglican Church of St Mary & St Martha which is found in the Mount Dennis neighbourhood and is an amalgamation of 4 congregations, the Church of the Advent, The Church of the Good Shepherd, St David's, and St John Weston. The congregations had been shrinking at these churches and the decision was made to join as one at the building of the Church of the Good Shepherd and to sell the other 3 locations. I'm not sure if any sales have gone through yet. This building was constructed in 1915 and had additions through the 1940s as the congregation grew. That box shape out front certainly doesn't enhance the facade.

  1. It seems to be the way that smaller church groups join as one these days Pat. I'm not religious myself but I can only imagine the benefits if religions meld and become more unified.

  3. It is a bit on the boxy side. However, if it works for them, that's great

  4. It reminds me a bit of an Anglican church here.

  5. How nice - the building and the joining together of two churches.

  6. Mainline denominations are shrinking as opposed to independent fundamentalist groups. This grouping decision was doubtless a wise one. I dislike the buildings exterior, though.

  8. Nice to hear that churches can join together and make it work.

  9. Afraid that happens here and I feel it is a shame it does. See what you mean about the box on the front doing nothing for the Church

  10. I am amazed at how much you get around the city.

  11. Yes - my first thought was 'shame about the awful square lump blocking the west window'. It spoils what otherwise would have been an elegant building.

  12. It's a good thing to join other churches as opposed to just closing. I have seen a few lovely brick churches with the 'box' on the front. I'm sure they serve a good purpose but I'd think they could have made it a bit more appealing.

  13. It certainly does have a different design to it. Lots of smaller churches are declining as well in places here, too many big time churches that offer so many other things are getting the church goers these days.
