Symbol Bike Ring
This is another of the bike rings designed by the students of Bloor Collegiate and installed along Bloor St W near the school. This peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 for the British nuclear disarmament movement and the symbol itself comes from the semaphore signs for N and D. I had no idea it was such an old symbol!
This has got to be one of the most recognised signs ever Pat, just a shame there isn't any more peace in the world now as there was then, maybe even less today sadly.
ReplyDeleteYes! Semaphore: N & D! You are so smart!
ReplyDeleteNice bike parking sign.
ReplyDeleteFine looking bike parking ring. Let us hope the message of the symbol goes world wide.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is an appropriate symbol no matter what era it's used in.
ReplyDeleteI did not know the symbol was so old. I wish there was peace in the world, one can hope. Have a happy day and new week ahead!
ReplyDeleteBike parking has another great piece of art to use. It will get people thinking about peace hopefully even if its only for a second or two.
ReplyDeleteWe can only hope. Beautifully designed and crafted -- I enjoy practical art.
ReplyDeleteThat sign does have a lot of history!
ReplyDeleteSuch an iconic symbol and I didn't realize it was so old!
ReplyDeleteI've always favored that peace symbol and now I know where it came from. Thanks! Makes for a great bike ring, too.
ReplyDeleteRighteousness
ReplyDeleteMan, Toronto has so many interesting bicycle stands.
ReplyDeleteYes, may peace be with us all!
