Last week I took the 10 minute ferry ride to the Toronto Islands which are located in Lake Ontario just off the lakeshore downtown. There are 4 ferry routes to the Islands and I took the trip to Ward's Island which is where you can still find around 250 homes. The islands were totally inhabited until the 1950s when the decision was made to turn the whole place into parkland but the residents at Ward's have resisted so far. I'll show you some more pics over the next few days.
This ferry is the Sam McBride which is named after a former mayor and was commissioned in 1939.
...interesting, something I didn't know!
ReplyDeleteHello, nice ferry. Looks like a pretty day for a boat ride.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day!
I have never been on a ferry. I think visiting an island would be fun
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Ferry boats are always fun to ride. Did you take a bicycle to get around the island?
ReplyDeleteI'll be looking forward to you photos from the island. It certainly looks like you had a perfect day for the trip.
ReplyDeleteIt's been years since I've been over to the islands, and that was either Centre Island, or more recently, at the island airport over at the west end.
ReplyDeleteThe lighthouse out there, I'd love to see.
Nothing like a ferry ride to start your day off exploring the island.
ReplyDeleteI was at a convention in Toronto in, I believe, 1966 and I recall that one event was held at a country club out on one of those islands but I can't find any sign of it now on Google Maps.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a very long time since I have been to the islands.
ReplyDeleteGreat maritime city of the great lakes
ReplyDeleteI like ferry rides. Thank you for your kinds words about the loss of my dog.
ReplyDeleteIt may be a short ride but with a ferry it is always a complete separation not able to overcome the distance with your own power.
ReplyDeleteI often use a ferry in WI to get to our favourite island but it is much smaller than this one. Am anxious to see the photos of the homes.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing more Pat.. I really enjoy a trip on the ferry from the south shore over to the city.
ReplyDeleteThis is some ferry! How fun, and what a great day for it.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting tension between the good idea of preserving parkland and the rights of residents who have already built and inhabited homes on the island. I am in favor of both.
