Times Change

I showed you a mural yesterday from the Liberty Village neighbourhood and today show one of the typical industrial buildings that once occupied the whole area. When industry left for overseas these buildings became studios and lofts for artists but as is usually the case gentrification has taken place and most of the artists have moved on to other spaces. Now these buildings are divided up into offices and design studios although this one has a climbing club on the main floor. Many of the really large factories have been torn down and the usual condo towers have replaced them. There are a lot of trendy restaurants in the area now too. The studio I had for 10 years is now a restaurant.

  1. A striking looking building. More appealing than yet another condo building.

  4. I like this building better than a condo too. My grammar school was converted to apartments for the elderly. These old building have lots of history and character. The newer ones probably won't last as long.

  5. I much prefer the look of an old building to a new one.

  6. There is a life cycle of urban neighborhoods. Artists look for inexpensive space, and then the neighborhood become trendy and gentrifies which the artists can no longer afford. Cities are interesting.

  7. How cool then you can go inside and see your old studio! Seems like they take a lot of places even old fire stations around here and turn them into cafes or coffee houses and etc. Great looking place.

  9. Always like the buildings from those times . They are timeless and adaptable for all kinds of applications. Try that with a new office building with a curtain wall and concrete structure.

  10. Your studio is now a restaurant! When I was a teen my father had a janitorial service. I grew up working in one particular office building in Philadelphia. An older building six stories close to the river. At one point I was the overnight person there and watchman. I really love that cool old building and thought it would be neat if I could rent one of the offices and live there. Well somebody else got a good idea and it is now condos! In a trendy neighborhood of Philadelphia. You and I were there before it all happened, Pat
