A Tough Butterfly


We don't see many butterflies in November but a couple of weeks ago on a sunny day this beauty spent the afternoon fluttering around on the Marigolds on my south facing deck. I was out there too enjoying the unusual late autumn warmth along with tens of bees who were buzzing around my large Chrysanthemum. I am pretty sure this was a Painted Lady butterfly.

    It certainly looks like the Painted Ladies we see in the UK - though seldom or never in November.

    What a surprise! We have two butterfly species, I believe 2, that overwinter. The others fly south.

    What a pleasant surprise. I would not expect to see butterflies that far north at this time of year.

    When I left the float cabin in October for our snowbird RV trip to Arizona I had to cut back all of my beautiful blooming marigolds. I grew them from saved seed planted in July and they were in their prime. I knew the frost would come while we are gone so it made more sense to cut them back. I used the flowers and foliage to mulch my newly planted tulip bulbs to help them make it through the winter. Maybe some marigold seeds will sprout around them as well. - Margy
