New Streetcar Preview

In November the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) held an open house to show off a mock-up of our new streetcars - not sure when we will see the real ones on the street. A huge tent was erected at one of the transit yards and this model of the front half of a new train was unveiled. The real cars will be 30m long, have more & better seats, bicycle accommodation and air conditioning. What amazed me was the number of people (with cameras) who turned up for the viewing!

  1. Hmmm, it's a trend... someone else I visited this morning posted about the subways in NYC... nicely caught candid 'street' scene...

  2. This is a typical looking streetcar. I suppose there will be adjustments to be made on some streets since they're so much longer than the Red Rockets.

Are transit riders welcoming the switch to modern equipment? I gather there is quite a lot of sentimental attachment to the RR. I've only ever used the subway in Toronto.

  3. I don't know what it is replacing, but the new one does look like it will be comfortable.

  4. This looks great. I love traveling by tram, but have to travel to another city to do so, because we lost ours in 1959 and despite promises the city has yet to rediscover the joy of the mode of transport.

  5. Is a streetcar the same as a tram then? This looks so sleek and smart. A very civilised way to ride.

  8. I guess just like trainspotters, there are streetcar spotters who revel in such things.

The public transport system tell us a lot about the city life, cool, modern and safe. ;-)

  11. It's long past time Toronto upgraded the subway - it's the only major North American city that carries most of its passengers on surface tram lines.
