Wars Past

This has always been my favourite of the war memorials along the median of University Ave. Done by Canadian artist Walter Seymour Allward it is a memorial to the Canadians who died in the South African War of 1899-1902 and it was erected in 1910. Lest we forget.

  1. I can see why it would be a favorite. It's very striking.

  4. Strikingly beautiful...and I must admit that, in my case, the quote would have to be 'lest we never knew' ( when it comes to this particular war). I'm off to Google it.

  5. Is the South African War of 1899-1902 the same as the Boer War? I'm seriously lacking when it comes to the history of South Africa (or Canada for that matter). Not something to be proud of but I'd like to know more. It certainly is a fine memorial.

  6. @Lowell: yes, the South African War is interchangeably called the Boer War.

I have passed that memorial each time I've been in the city. It's a striking monument.
