I am not usually a big fan of these stylized signatures but somehow in this location just off Queen St West it works for me. I think it is all the different layers and surfaces and the pics of the 2 guys standing guard that gives it a great effect. I have been unable to find the artists for these works but this location has been the site of graffiti fests in the past and judging by the peeling paint these may remain from one of those. Enlarge to see the details better.
Taking part in Monday Murals. For more murals click here.
I'm not a big fan either but the photo is very eye-catching.
ReplyDeleteThe work on the top is really good, it's not common to find faces so realistic like that one. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with your assessment. Fancy name tags don't do it for me either. But as a whole, with the figures, it has a snazzy pop. And who can complain that it's adorning a parking space. Good capture. Thanks, Pat, for participating in this week's Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteAnother non-fan here, but I do like the guy in glasses.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, most of us seem to agree about this one!
ReplyDeleteIt is so funny how the context makes some things so much more appropriate. The two guys do make a huge difference, and you are right, the colors are really great.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with you, Pat. Even though taggers turn me off completely, your photo shows that the whole is quite pleasing.
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually not so fond of the "tags" either, but I agree this one is not so bad. The colors are nice and bright in any case!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a tall ladder was needed to paint this one.
ReplyDeleteI like the guard in the low right.
ReplyDeleteThat's just wild! What a concoction of ideas and icons and symbols. I wonder if anyone knows what it all means or if it means anything at all?
ReplyDeleteHi Red Pat. The thick, three d signatures are called throw ups (as opposed to "tags") and artists work for a long time to develop their own style. One of the things I like best about them is that they tend to become more abstract and colorful over the years.
ReplyDeleteI really like this photo!
I agree with you but it is colorful and I like how it is contained in that corner.
ReplyDeleteBut, I have to admire the talent of those that created it even if it is not to my taste.
It makes those walls quite busy!
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was originally an art, but was attacked by taggers and painted graffiti on top of the mural.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors on the top one.
I join the chorus against graffiti in general, tags and signatures in specific. Interesting to learn from Dyanna the term "throw up" for 3D signatures. But I also agree that this appears to be a good corner for this talent and the composition works. I just wish it was invited instead of illicit.
