Big news in Toronto last week was the upcoming closing of the Book City store on Bloor St in the Annex. Book City is a small family-owned chain with 4 stores in the city but this was the original one that opened more than 37 years ago and has been the go-to bookstore for the Annex and the U of Toronto community. The rents along Bloor St have reached the point that the owners couldn't survive here any longer. It is a sad time since it was a wonderful store with a knowledgable staff.

I hate to see all these book stores closing. Yes, I know there is Amazon.com and yes, I know most people are using e-readers now but, I'm of the opinion that one of life's pleasures is browsing a book store. I hate to see that sliding away.
ReplyDeleteAlways sad to see places close, especially book shops.
ReplyDeleteSame here, my favorite Book Shop in Wallingford closed a few years ago. I spnet many happy times looking round it as a child & adult
ReplyDeletewonder what will move in to the high rent district. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad! I loved that little shop. You could always find some sort of treasure there.
ReplyDeleteThings will never remain as they were. So sad to see. I was reading an article last night which pointed out that one quarter of the American population have not read a book within the past year.
ReplyDeleteAlways a shame to see a book store close up.
ReplyDeleteNot that the landlord gives a damn.
We've lost most of our small bookstores here as well.
ReplyDeleteNeighborhood book stores are disappearing fast. Sorry to see this one is also in trouble.
ReplyDeleteI hate this. The thought that kids might never know real bookshops in their adulthood is depressing to me.
ReplyDeleteSad to see this happening over and over again.
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame! :-(

I hate it when bookstores close.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad. It's probably just not the higher rents, but Amazon is putting lots of these folks out of business. I don't think that's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing like a good bookstore where the people running it know what they're doing.
Don't you hate that! I still buy physical books, not electronic books, and when I can, I prefer local bookstores like this. I am not the type to rail against change in general, but the loss of independent bookstores is one of the areas where I sound cranky.
ReplyDeleteBeyond sad!
ReplyDeleteNooooo! That's just terrible Pat. So sad to see and I bet so many people are going to miss it horribly!
ReplyDeleteAn absolute crime!
ReplyDeleteIt's very sad -- I used to love little bookstores. But Amazon with the Kindle makes it so easy (I'm not proud of myself but ....)
ReplyDeleteSay it isn't so!! Spent lots of time in there.
