This is yet another pic taken along St Clair Ave in the Forest Hill neighbourhood and it shows Holy Rosary Catholic Church which was built in 1927 to replace a much smaller chapel that had been used since 1892. The new church was modeled after the 15th century Gothic church, St Mary The Virgin in St Neots, Huntingdonshire, England but when looking at that church you can't help but notice the grand bell tower it has. I could find no info on why there is no tower or steeple here but apparently there are beautiful stained glass windows that I couldn't see since the church was locked. I may have to start going to mass on Sundays in order to get inside these churches!
Taking part in Inspired Sunday. Click here for more religious buildings.
I've commented on this before, but it's kind of sad that churches have to be locked now. They certainly weren't when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteA church without a steeple, now that does seem a little odd Pat.. I've noticed most of the churches here are locked too when they're not in use.. Such a shame that its come to this hey..
ReplyDeleteit does need a little something for a spire. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree that the spire is missing.
ReplyDeleteIt's still beautiful without a steeple. But I don't think it's worth going to mass to get inside! :)
ReplyDeleteIt does seem a little strange without a steeple.
ReplyDeleteIt looks more like a Norman chuch like that.
ReplyDeleteSo does that mean that churches are only open for mass?
Shame the church was closed, and it definitely looks unfinished without a tower/steeple
ReplyDeleteIt does look really weird without the bell tower.
ReplyDeleteThey probably ran out of money - that's the case with a number of church buildings in the UK.
ReplyDeleteYou do feel the absense of it in this case.
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I've been through a whole slew of churches.
Yep, there's definitely a story there somewhere.
ReplyDeletei love the red door. & all those gorgeous windows. ( :
ReplyDeleteI like it but I must say that it does look like it is missing something.
ReplyDeleteI would love to go inside and see the windows.

Maybe we need to wait a while until they raise the money for a tower. (And, I have posted an intemperate rant about locked churches, myself.)
ReplyDeleteInteresting anomaly Pat!
ReplyDeleteIntriguing! Get those interior shots...
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame the churches are locked. They are locked here in the boonies too.
ReplyDeleteIt does look quite oddly shaped!
ReplyDeleteI hope they will reuse it. The building deserves it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful building!!!
