Brick Church
This is the Church Of St Mary Magdalene Anglican Church which apparently follows an Anglo-Catholic convergence of Roman Catholic & Anglican influences. I'm not sure what that all means. The church was designed by Frank Darling and construction began in 1888 and finished in 1908 but there have been several renovations since then. It is suitable to show it this week since the parish is well known for excellence in sacred music particularly during Holy Week. It's hard to believe but I actually got inside this church - it was locked but some people inside opened up and invited me in. I'll show you the wonderful interior tomorrow.
It really stands against the white and the blue.
ReplyDeleteIt looks quite imposing.
ReplyDeletei like the long, thin arched windows.
ReplyDeleteIt's a striking structure. Some Anglicans (and Episcopalians in the US) feel the usual Anglican/Episcopalian traditions are not "Catholic" enough...so, those parishes use more "Roman" practices in their rituals and thus they attach to themselves the moniker, "Anglo-Catholic."
ReplyDeleteI always wonder if people who stress about things really think their God cares much one way or the other. :)
Thanks for showing your city with your photographs. Happy Easter
ReplyDeleteHow nice that someone let you in! It's sad that so may churches are locked. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteFrom the appearance of the brick, I'd say it's had some additions and/or deletions over the years.
ReplyDeleteWell once again you and I are on the same wavelength Pat, you'll see what I mean tomorrow :) Can't wait to see inside your church tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteIt looks very proud with the blue sky above.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me much of my childhood brick library! Maybe it's the door's not really sure, because the library was a much more red to the brick. So happy you got to go inside!
ReplyDeleteI love brickwork, and even more brick churches. I am really curious to see the interior...
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to seeing the inside of this beauty!
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful set against the blue sky.

ReplyDeleteIt is an impressive looking church!
ReplyDeleteNo idea what all that means, but it is a lovely old fashioned church( and I mean that as a huge compliment).
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing the interior compared to the exterior..
ReplyDeleteDon't ask me. I don't know what that means either.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it seem odd to you that so many churches are locked up? I used to think that churches are always open. Not so.
