Bicycles

Another utility box that references the history of its location, this one is located in the Weston neighbourhood. Weston was the site of the CCM (Canada Cycle & Motor Company) plant until it closed in 1983. The company was formed in 1899 and produced most of the bicycles that Canadian kids rode through until the 1960s. I had 2 of them! In the winter the workers at the plant made ice skates from the scrap metal from the bikes. The artist for this one is Robin Hesse and she made a great choice using the Penny Farthing image, don't you think?

    The Penny-Farthing is a powerful image. So glad it has such important local meaning. Too bad the company went out of business. Just when they went out of business the bicycle industry was booming. Perhaps their products failed to keep up with the times?

    A truly unique mural and I wish that all utility boxes would be painted , esp with sorting as historical as this one. great find!

    This is terrific! I know CCM for hockey skates, but didn't realize that its main business was bicycles. I don't remember seeing any down here. In the USA, Columbia and Schwinn bicycles were the bikes of choice when I was a kid, unless your parents had enough money to buy you a Raleigh.
