Eastern Grey Squirrel

I thought I would show you another pic of one of our black squirrels which are actually Eastern Grey Squirrels just showing a different colour. You can have a litter of baby squirrels with both grey & black ones. There are some small pockets in the city of white squirrels which are also Eastern Grey Squirrels. It seems to me that Toronto has more of the black ones these days and after our mild winter last year the population numbers are huge!
Taking part in Saturday's Critters. Click HERE to see more creatures from around the world.

  4. You know, they are cute as can be but curmudgeon that I am, I think they are a scourge to our environment! Here is a poem about them that I rather like:

The Grey Squirrel - Poem by Humbert Wolfe

    Like a small grey
    coffee-pot,
    sits the squirrel.
    He is not

    all he should be,
    kills by dozens
    trees, and eats
    his red-brown cousins.

    The keeper on the
    other hand,
    who shot him, is
    a Christian, and

    loves his enemies,
    which shows
    the squirrel was not
    one of those.

  6. I like these a lot. Partly because they are so different from our little, scrawny, brown squirrels. We do have fox squirrels and they are cute, but that's about it.

  10. Fine squirrel shot. Surprised it held still long enough for you get the picture. Our squirrels are mostly a gray color, but never black. We also sometimes see red squirrels.

  14. I have never been a big fan of these guys. In Naples, if someone comes upon an injured squirrel, they can take it to the Conservancy, which will fix it up. Seems extreme for such a common wild animal.
