I hadn't seen one of these in years until I spotted this one in the apple orchard of Spadina House back in October. I was afraid to give it a crank so I don't know if it still works!
When I was young there were a number of these around. There is still one in a state part near us. Sometimes the cold water pumped by hand tastes that much better.
My wife's grandparents had one of these and they lived in New Jersey. I don't remember seeing water come out of it but it was located near where she had her garden. Nice seeing this one.
I gave such a pump somewhere in the past a crank and was immediately stung by a bee that had a nest in that thing. So I now think twice before giving a pump that old a swing.
What a surprise to find one of these... especially in the city.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is an old one !
ReplyDeleteSimpler times, Pat
ReplyDeleteOh now I'm curious Pat :) I don't see any drips, usually those old things drip don't they ?
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I haven't seen one of those in years either. Nice capture.
ReplyDeleteNow that is a wonder of past times! Pumping water was a proper workout!
ReplyDeleteI spent many a day in my childhood pumping one of those.
ReplyDeleteThey are a very rare sight!

ReplyDeleteThere's one down the road used as a decoration. I remember grandma's though...the water that came forth was cold and tasty!
