Hungry Hairy

This hungry Hairy Woodpecker is one of only a few birds I have seen at the bird feeders lately at the Veterans Centre at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. I'm hoping they have disappeared because of the Peregrine Falcon who took up residence in the area and not because of population decline!

  1. Hello,

Great capture of the Hairy Woodpecker. I hope it is safe from the Falcon. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend.

  2. Same disappearing act happen at my bird feeder. Give them a few days... the snow covered ground, their normal source of food, will force them to return.

  3. What a lovely creature. Hope the disappearing act is indeed temporally.

  4. Wonderful photo! We have lots of woodpeckers close to where I live. I hear them all the time. Hopefully the birds are being cautious while there is a predator about.

  6. It is always good to see a Hairy Woodpecker. I suspect that it is not a regular prey species for a Peregrine Falcon and once the sustained cold of winter sets in it may be a more regular patron at the feeders. We have one that comes to our backyard sporadically, whereas two or the Downy Woodpeckers are there every day.

  8. He's beautiful Pat. It's certainly a tough world out there for birds and wild animals.

  10. This is not the kind of woodpecker I see, either in New England or Florida.
