Frida & Diego Catrinas

There was no photography allowed inside the Frida & Diego show at the AGO but as you left the display area there was this installation of Frida & Diego as Catrinas (well-dressed skeletons). This is a nod to the practice in Mexico of portraying loved ones as skeletons during the Day of the Dead festival and seemed to be quite suitable for this pair since in many of the photos, in the show, of their living spaces they had a large collection of Day of the Dead figures.

    I guess the AGO never allows photos. Love the figures though. I've always admired that tradition.

    It seems sone of these cultures have a healthier attitude towards death than we have.

    I don't understand this obsession with the dead but those skeletons look good all decked out in that finery! It's interesting that each of the faces is quite expressive.

    I don't know much about Mexican traditions. The dressed skeletons are very colorful, though.

    I never can understand 'no photography' rules. It's getting increasingly difficult to take pictures in any indoor areas thesedays. Nonsense in my opinion. Anyway, these are the happiest and healthiest skeletons I've ever seen!

    So glad you got to take at least one shot Pat, it's pretty frustrating when you're not allowed to take photo. Love the skeletons and the happy outlook!

    That must have been a wonderful exhibit -- and this is definitely a great time of year to be seeing it and celebrating Dio Di Los Muertos. (I wish I knew more about that celebration -- what I have seen of it seems like such a great idea.)
