Frankenthaler at the AGO
I couldn't leave the Ab Ex show from the AGO without featuring at least 1 of the women artists (who really don't get the same attention as the guys). One of the most impressive pieces in the show is this work by Helen Frankenthaler titled "Jacob's Ladder" from 1957 which is quite large at over 9' x 5'. She is known for painting on the floor (like Pollock) on unprepared canvases with thinned paint which gives her work the look of stains rather than paints. It makes for a very distinctive result!

I didn't know this artist, I'm very glad you post this shot!
I got goosebumps when I saw it enlarged!
I like that you have a viewer in this photo since it shows how enormous this piece is. I like the colours!
It's been anice series Red - thanks for posting!
Wow that must be some exhibit. I wonder what you will show us tomorrow.
I like this painting, I also like how you've captured people studying the art in this and a photo a couple of days ago.
It is a nice piece, but I don't plan to put it over my living room mantel. That's OK. No Pollock or Rothko over the mantel either.
It's easy on the eyes!
Have a nice evening.
Gosh I didn't realize that Red, as fatwork.r as art goes (or anything really) women should definitely get the same recognition, this is a really good piece of artwork.
I researched her work and found that Walker Art Museum in Minneapolis has some of her work in their collection. She has quite a few pieces available to view on my favorite art site, Artcyclopedia. Thanks for posting this today because it introduced an artist who was unfamiiiar to me.
I am really enjoying this series. Great compositions with the people watching the paintings.
