In the 1800s various companies built roads around Toronto and they were allowed to collect tolls from those using the roads. Davenport Road was one of the main roadways passing by and this small cottage was built in 1835 at what is now Davenport Rd & Bathurst St and used as Tollgate #3. It was moved in 1895 and became a small residence a couple of blocks east until it was 'discovered' and moved back to the corner in 1993. Funds were raised to restore it and a small museum was built at the back giving the history of the tollkeepers. There is now a small park around it and the canoe planter I showed last Wednesday is in the park.

Wonderful old building, I believe toll roads were very common here as well, I think one or two may still exist in private hands...
Nice piece of history. The way things are going in Ontario this bit of history is going to repeat it's self.
I don´t think we have toll roads here in the Netherlands, however there are a lot in various European countries around us.
Nice to see this and to remember the tollkeepers.
An interesting bit of history.
You still pay a toll on all our highways...
I just bet if the walls could speak, they'd have some interesting tales to share! Amazing adventures for this lovely little cottage.
That's a very quaint looking place!
a rather cute little park idea. :)
That's a nice spot.
lovely white building
Looks like an intereseting little park with many bits of history to admire. Love the style of the little building.
A part of the city's history I didn't know about.
Cool to have kept it. You had to pay toll to enter Versailles until the 1950s or 60s I believe. And you still pay toll to use French motorways!
That's interesting history to go with your fine photo of this little bungalow. Would like to spend some time in this park and touring the museum.
It's been fixed up nicely since I lived there.
Very informative.
My SIGNS, SIGNS
Shoot! We've STILL got toll roads where I live. No toll keeper's houses, though. :-)
A great bit of history. Tom The Backroads Traveller
Interesting that funds were found to preserve something as relatively normal in those days.
ah, such GREEN grass! I can imagine myself taking a nap there.
Hope you are well, RedPat!
Fascinating!
Sweet little house.
Nice that these little historic gems are being preserved.
Reading too fast I read it 'Always a Troll." I started lookin'.

I didn't know there were toll roads in Toronto before the 407.
