This is a pic of the College Street United Church located at Bathurst & College St, a very busy corner in the city. A grand Gothic Revival church was built here in 1885, large enough to hold 1,200 people, but as the years passed the congregation shrank and the building needed a lot of upkeep. In the 1980s most of the church except for the original tower was demolished and 7 stories of condos were built above the church. The church still occupies the whole ground floor but I have no idea what it looks like inside. Quite a change!
Two streetcar lines intersect at this corner, hence all the lines & wires in the pic.

Love the mix. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLocation is not nice but histor intetesting
ReplyDeleteThat's a hugely impressive building!
ReplyDeleteWould like to see inside.
ReplyDeleteI agree with José, the remodelling has been beautifully achieved, it's a really attractive building Pat. We haven't had trams in Perth for so long I didn't realise the amount of overhead wires that were required.
ReplyDeleteI love all of the interesting lines in this shot. Looks like some kind of net hanging over the road
ReplyDelete1st we have to talk about all those wires ... that is way too much ... they need to go with underground wiring. i have never seen so many ... goodness gracious. wow wee!! ( :
ReplyDeletenow to the church --- so massive. would love to see inside. just to see what they did, decorative wise.
That's a lot of wires that's for sure! This building is very impressive, nice capture of this corner!
ReplyDeleteToo WIRED!
ReplyDeleteI love how they blended the condo portion with the tower. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteFascinating photo and story! What in the world was in those 7 stories before they became condos?
ReplyDelete'7 stories of condos were built above the church', that is a shocking sentence, but the resulting building it is not bad at all!
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely. I can see where people would love to live in the condos. I saw the wires and then I looked for the streetcar tracks. Every convenience has a cost. However, I would rather have wires than live like they did two centuries ago. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLike your photo contrasting the architectural styles. You managed to get more wires in your post today than I did despite shooting the wires leaving Oahe Dam power plant. But I'll bet I've got more voltage.
ReplyDeleteGreat post today with loads of info and a fine photo to go with it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThat's very nice actually. I don't think I'd ever seen a church -or what's left of it- like this (despite those wires!)
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that they built condos around the church.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting the church is still on the ground floor! I would love to have a peek at some of the condos. ;))
ReplyDeleteInteresting how we love or hate all those wires which are suddenly re-emerging in cities across the UK.
ReplyDeleteSad on one hand, but good that it is still being used. Wires all over the place! Tom The Backroads Traveller
ReplyDeleteFascinating structure.
ReplyDeleteSo many wires! Trolleys! Directions! Places to go in Toronto!

That's quite a building, it would certainly have made a statement when the whole place was a church. Lovely pictures with all those wires and cables
ReplyDeletethe cables are impressive!
ReplyDeleteI like what they've done with this!
ReplyDeleteWow that is stunning.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a nice image, RedPat, with the spider's net of trolley wires framing the building.
ReplyDeleteWhat a mess of wires :)))
ReplyDeleteNot sure I like the idea, and I doubt they would get away with that idea here. Looks like a block of offices with a spire.
ReplyDeleteOh, is there a spider somewhere?
ReplyDeleteThe building looks great !
A very stark contrast!
