Flood Control
This is a pic of the Humber River just above the area where I showed the lazing dog on Saturday. In 1954 during Hurricane Hazel the Humber River flooded major parts of Toronto resulting in 81 deaths, many of them people swept away in homes during the night. Since that time the river itself has many of these flood control barriers have been installed and all housing in the flood plains is prohibited. It is hard to believe this peaceful scene was once so horrific.

I will never forget Hurricane Hazel. She roared through here on my birthday. I remember walking in the torrents of rain to the corner store to buy myself a treat.
I agree, it looks so calm that it's hard to think of it doing so much damage. I grew up in a city right on the Mississippi River. It flooded every single year in the spring when the snow would melt. The people who lived near it planned for it.

Hello,
The flooding is scary, it is good they can control the water with these barriers. It is a pretty scene! Enjoy your day!
It's pretty and looks inviting on a hot day like today.
The trade off today is that you have these wonderful parks.
Rivers are wild things until they are tamed.
Rivers can be scary especially in storms. We had one in 2017 in Inishowen that was devastating to some communities only a few miles from us.
There is a reason we call them "flood plains."
A pretty scene!
That's a scary history. There are a lot of cities in the U.S. that haven't restricted growth into flood plains.
Hubby was in my place when his´ was flooded. Furniture the water moved, it went into the tub, toilet, everywhere. Well, water... stinking mud it was.
He moved in in Braunschweig. I have to thank that "little" flood. No lives were lost, but it was scary, too.
It does look beautifully peaceful and calm Pat, but like yourself, the memories will always be there ✨
Me encanta ver el agua así Pat.
Cuídate.
Un abrazo.
"all housing in the flood plains is prohibited."
