Hiding His Colours

This Red-winged Blackbird was poking about looking for food but was keeping his bright red wing patch almost hidden. I was hoping he would flash it a bit but not until he flew up into a tree could you see the large red area. And of course he was then hidden by the leaves in the tree.

I am always happy to see the Redwing Blackbirds, and the Yellow Headed ones also. They like to hang around water and wetlands.

I wonder if that's just chance or if they deliberately do that to make themselves less conspicuous? Lovely photo anyway, I wish we had them over here.

I don't think I've seen any of these beauties here in the desert but, I remember them from growing up in Illinois. That flash of red is always a bit of a surprise when you see it.

A pretty flash of colour. Our blackbirds are black without adornment.
