An Unusual One

The squirrels we have here are Eastern Grey Squirrels but they are not all grey. Like humans there are different hair colours. The majority of ours are black but there are still a lot of the grey ones and in some parts of the city there are small colonies of white ones - not albinos but rather true white ones with dark eyes. When I was walking along Philosopher's Walk I probably saw 50 black squirrels and maybe 4 grey ones and then I spotted this guy. He was very pale but quite lovely with that bushy tail and pale features. Apparently a mutation of some sort. I was thrilled to see him.

A very long time ago, when I moved from Montreal to the Toronto area, I was surprised to see black squirrels. I couldn't recall seeing them in Montreal at that time.

This is what the squirrels I grew up seeing looked like. When I was a kid, we had a couple we could feed from our hand.

What a truly special sighting. That pale squirrel is absolutely beautiful with that bushy tail, and it’s amazing that you got a photo of him. It’s wild how nature throws in those little variations right next to the common ones. Great find for Saturday Critters. www.melodyjacob.com

Interesting you have such a variety of squirrels. Most all of our squirrels are gray. Yes, this little guy is quite light in color.

Naked ears! Ours have bushy ears, RedPat, but sadly "ours", who lived here, are gone... So sad.

We only have red squirrels and grey squirrels on the prairies. The first time I ever saw a black squirrel was in Toronto and I was amazed to see it!
