Icicles

There are an extraordinary number of icicles around this winter some hanging quite dangerously over walkways into homes. It has been so cold that when the sun has melted the snow it freezes up before draining down the downspouts. It makes for some interesting sights.

...they are huge this year.

Icicles like that are a sign of ice damming in the roof. Not a good situation.

Icicle formation is a sign of poor attic insulation. The heat from the building escapes through the roof and melts the snow which re-freezes as icicles. Yes, they are dangerous over walks and doorways.

I've had the same thought as Debra and TFG.

I'm impressed be all those icicles. I wouldn't want to stand under them.

As you know, we have our share too. Did I post the last photos, I wonder. I'll have to check. I get lost in my own posts. 🙂

I''ve heard they can be very dangerous. I suppose at lower levels, you can snap them off.

The icicles may glitter like crystal sculptures in the pale sun, but their silent weight above doorways is a sharp reminder of how fiercely the cold still holds its ground.
