I showed you a section of this gatehouse previously (HERE) and when we got a bit of snow last week I decided it was time for a pic of the whole thing. Although its setting was originally rural only the width of the sidewalk separates it from the very busy Bayview ave now.

This window belongs to what had been a gatehouse to a large estate, Uplands, off Bayview Ave. It is now a private home and the estate itself has been divided into smaller lots. The Tudor style gatehouse was built in 1921 and designed by Eden Smith and now has heritage designation. Just as I took this pic a bus passed behind me which you can see in the reflection!

St Thomas's Anglican Church is located right in the midst of the U of Toronto campus but isn't part of the university. It is a church of Anglo-Catholic tradition and was established in 1874 although this building was constructed in 1893. This Arts & Crafts church was designed by architect Eden Smith who designed many of the homes in Wychwood Park as well as 3 Carnegie libraries in the city, and several churches. Love that nice red door!

It is very often that you see a gate like this guarding the grounds of a home in Toronto but this happens to be one of the old original estates in the Forest Hill neighbourhood and I would imagine that it has always had a gate. The home was built in 1915 and designed by architect Eden Smith who designed a lot of the homes in Wychwood Park and other buildings I have shown before (click the label below). Even on satellite pics you can't really see much of this heritage protected home.

This is Grace Church On-The-Hill, an Anglican church found in the Forest Hill neighbourhood. The Gothic building was designed by architect Eden Smith who designed many places in the city including many of the homes in Wychwood Park. This church was built in 1913 and is now heritage designated. Once again the doors were all locked but it is famous for the stained glass so I will try to get inside one day.

Wychwood Library is one of 10 public libraries built in Toronto between 1907 and 1916 using grants from the American industrialist Andrew Carnegie. It was designed by architect Eden Smith, who designed many of the fine homes in the Wychwood Park neighbourhood, and was one of 3 identical ones built. The curved section was an addition built in 1978 and was designed by Phillip Carter. Early on a Sunday morning there was little activity around and I will try to get by for some interior shots of the heritage-designated structure.
I showed the door from one of the Munk School Of Global Affairs buildings yesterday and today this is a pic that I took last year of the enclosed arcade of the school's other building. This building was built in 1909 and designed by architect Eden Smith as 3 separate mens residences for U of T. In 2000, they were joined and remodeled by KPMB Architects (the same firm did yesterday's reno) to serve as the Munk School. This arcade was built along the side of the old structure with wonderful formal gardens out the windows on one side and the beautiful original red exterior on the other. I always love an arcade!
I love this house so had to have it in a post. Called "Upland Cottage", it was constructed in 1906 for one of the founding artists in the community, G. A. Reid. There seems to be debate as to whether he or Eden Smith designed it although the city records show it as a Eden Smith project. Either way it is a lovely house and a good way to end the tour of Wychwood.
This is probably one of the larger homes in Wychwood Park and is another of the Eden Smith designed homes. It was constructed in 1910 for the lawyer first involved in setting up the corporation to run the park and his desire was for a Georgianized Wright prairie style. Go figure. It has been beautifully restored and is a pleasure to see especially on a hot muggy day as it sits in the shade of the many trees around it.
This is 1 of the many homes in Wychwood Park that was designed by Eden Smith. He was a very prolific architect in Toronto and is credited with introducing the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement to Canada after his arrival from England. This particular house, constructed in 1911, owes a lot to the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright's work near Chicago.
