In order to draw attention to the city's indigenous heritage a group has been installing signs that have the street name as well as the name on which it it is based. Spadina is based on the Ojibwe word Ishpadinaa which means "a place on a hill", suitable for this location at the base of the hill where Casa Loma is located.

I didn't know that! Cool!
A terrific way to honour another culture. Wonderful!!
Know I wonder what the green footstep means.
Nice sign and I appreciate the commentary. Ojibwa Indians used to camp in the woods on my grandmother's farm in northern Minnesota during the summer.
You beat me to this great street sign ;)
(and I even posted an S today - but have yet to get a pic of this one!)
That is really cool.
I like the depiction of the eagle? on the sign.
Thanks Pat. I never had a clue about it's origin.
Appreciated the background info on this sign.
Frankly My Dear
...and in Quebec it would trilingual?
Ah,so that's the origin of the name.
Interesting origin of this name. Around here many of the place names are Lakota in origin.
such a good way to educate residents of your city and visitors about the origin of the street names.
I really like the white on blue colour scheme.
Very nice.
That makes a lot of sense, having lived up on that hill!
That is a great idea! Lovely photo too.
That is a nice project. It should be adopted in many parts of our own country.
I love that they are doing this. Interesting to see how the English word was derived.
