Guardian Lion

This is one of a pair of marble Chinese guardian lions that are found outside one of the entrances to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). They are from the 17th century and were obtained by the ROM in 1923. This one looks quite fierce.

Chinese lions tend to look a lot more fierce than African lions. They look like they are about to pounce on you.

I thought it might be Chinese because I have seen them elsewhere. I didn't know it was at The ROM and had been there for 100 years.

Chinese guardian lions are always fierce. How interesting they should be guarding the ROM.

The statue frightens off the ghostly beings and evil spirits. The status of the lion is apparently revealed in their claw sculptures.
