I just happened to be going by while they were taking down scaffolding around the lower floor of this new building on Spadina south of Bloor St W. The tall building is a new student residence for U of Toronto while the small older building on the left was the site of a wonderful bookstore for 35 years. The old building is now just a reminder of its construction in 1885 and this part only survived after much resistance from neighbourhood groups to its proposed demolition.

This high rise building is not in keeping with the neighborhood, and will cast a huge shadow blocking sunlight. It will also bring in hundreds of students many who would like to park their cars here. I like the scale of the 1885 building, and glad it was saved.
That is a contrast.
What interesting architecture. It looks like keeping that historic building influenced the look of the new building.
Hugely high!
Great contrast and a super photo, I love it.
Looks like a very nice residence for the students.
Take care, have a great day!
It is very modern, the students will most likely enjoy living there.
That’s quite the residence, and the cost of residence is anything but cheap.
It's striking to see the layers of history side by side—new steel and glass rising next to a resilient 1885 relic, quietly holding the stories of a beloved bookstore and a community that fought to preserve its past
Good on the locals saving the older building. The new is a little unusual.
I haven't heard of it happening here, but certainly in the UK, where student housing is built by developers who price the rentals above what students can afford, go to authorities pleading their case that they can't get enough renters and so receive permission to turn the building into general accommodation, and so make a lot more money.
These days, everything always has to be big in construction. Fortunately, the little building on the left was still spared.
I absolutely love this!!! In Perth they are masters at this as well, old and new together!
At the Damrak in Amsterdam a big hotel was build around an old house were the owner would not depart. Very interesting. (victoria hotel)
