A Pebble Mosaic

This is the Ward's Island Community Pebble Mosaic which was installed last fall in front of the community centre on Ward's Island after countless hours of work by residents of the Toronto Islands. Over 50 people took pebble mosaic workshops before producing the mosaic in 26 pieces which were then installed to create this 12' in diameter piece.  I would think that Ward's and Algonquin Islands have arguably the highest concentration of artists and creative people in the city and this group came together to design and create the piece after much fundraising. You can see little ceramic pieces referencing aspects of island life - little houses, bikes (since it is a car-free area), fish, etc sprinkled among the pebbles.
Taking part in Monday Murals. Click here for more murals.

It's a cool colective work, and much more interesrting when we read its story. ;-)

Very pretty! And such an interesting story behind it. And another thing I've never noticed on the Islands. I'm so glad you're more observant! :)

I love mosaics and this one is great, the little colourful houses especially.

That's absolutely beautiful. Strangely enough, there are pebble mosaics in my local town centre too, though nothing like as elaborate as this one.

OMG - That is absolutely gorgeous. I wanted one in my backyard, I literally could find no pebble mosaic makers in the area, I ended up teaching the gentlemen I hired how to do it. I think I set them up on a whole new career path.

That's fantastic. Kudos to all involved. I would think it was difficult to coordinate this project. What a great result!

what a beautiful mosaic - so intricate. I like the almost monotone colours, too.

Gorgrous. This immediately reminded me of Roman Empire mosaics. The medium is different but the color choices are identical. How cool to have such a strong artistic community around you. Your art postings are always captivating. Thanks for contributing to Monday Mural.

It's a beautiful mosaic Pat and made even more so by the love and community spirit that went into the making of it.
