This lovely door and surrounding facade belongs to one of the Ontario government buildings oat Queen's Park. I love all the carving and details that were used in older times - such wonderful craftsmanship!
I agree with you and wonder why we can't do these kinds of things today...we've become so preoccupied with utilitarianism that art for art's sake is a forgotten concept. But it's buildings like this that bring character and resonance and illustrates the values of beauty and permanence to a society awash in hedonism, nihilism and immediacy - damn the consequences.

Beautiful work. Stonemasons really are craftsmen.
Wonderful style!
It's lovely and very grand.
It looks solid and official, just the way a government building should look.

Here ends the lecture! :-)
Nice..feels like summer!
So wonderful and classical.
It does look very stately.
This is wonderful, RedPat. Yale University has a lot of Gothic architecture like this.
Nowadays city councils would probably be accused of wasteful spending!
Great entranceway, wonderful stone work!
A very grand entrance indeed!
Love the arch above No.23 Pat, buildings were truly built to last in times long ago..we could learn something from them.
I love the arches and agree that the details are exquisite.
