"First High Flier"

Yet another  mural from the Islington neighbourhood painted by John Kuna, this one done in 2008 and done as a 2 part story. In May of 1944 a student at the local high school convinced a pilot of a Lancaster to drop cards over the football field of the school during a game. The cards could be redeemed for prizes and also contained advertisements. Any funds raised were to be used to buy bleachers for the field. Unfortunately, it was a windy day and all of the cards were blown onto nearby market gardens which were trampled by nearly 600 students chasing the cards!

It's a great mural and the story makes it even greater. I can just see people trampling the gardens to get one of the cards! :)

Oh no! That's quite a story Pat, and a plan that wasn't really thought out properly :) makes for a marvellous mural though!

That is a sort of sad story. That poor garden.

Thinking about that scene back then... hilarious. In the day... not so much.
Be careful what you wish for.

A mural with a fun story!
Having seen the real Lancaster at the Warplane Museum, the size seems to be accurately reflected here - it is huge!

Oh my, that is so funny. I'm sure it wasn't at the time.

Great story. I've passed these murals a million times when I took the bus to our office in Mississauga.

Quite a mural, and quite a plane!

Plenty of action in those murals! I guess that must be an active neighbourhood. :)

Very nice indeed. Love the plane.

Kuna does it again. What a story with good intentions gone awry. Obviously Islington never forgot it and decided to commemorate it. A sweet gesture. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
