Side Entrance

This is the side entrance to one of the large homes in the Annex neighbourhood, not the main entrance! It is quite wonderful isn't it?

It really is great! Growing up in Quincy Illinois, the city had lots of very large homes and so many of them had side entrances like this. I learned that these entrances were where the horse-drawn carriages would stop to let the owner and guests out especially when it cold or raining. It gave them a quick way to get inside. Usually the drive next to the entrance led right back to the stables and garage.

How nice that roman architecture is still in use in our time.

It's very okay with me! Stunning and inviting at the same time, with a dash of mystery to it!

I think Sharon's comment is correct. This may have been a carriage entrance. Looks like a lovely home.
