When this grocery store was built, probably 20 years ago, a row of trees was planted along the front of it with just a tiny bit of open soil around each of them. They struggled along and finally most of them had died and so recently they were all pulled out and these signs were placed where each tree was to warn people about the tripping hazard. Hopefully new trees appear with a better method of planting them.

The great quandary: cities need trees, but trees need space for their roots.
I'd take note of these signs. I've tripped too many times.

How did we ever survive without signs warning of danger? Suspect these signs have more to do with insurance liability than people's personal safety.
I agree with TFG about insurance liability. I hope if they plant new trees, they come up with a better plan for the survival of the trees.
I have no doubt that someone didn't read the signs.
You can't really expect trees to thrive in such a situation. Planners never seem to learn this evident truth.
