The Royal

The Royal is found on College St in Little Italy. The building was finished in 1939 and has had several names through the years as it functioned as a cinema. It is now an event space but also shows second run films and also takes part in film festivals.

I love these old Art Deco theaters. We have one in town that is now a gymastics center and a barber shop.

The Royal on College St in Little Italy has a fascinating history. Completed in 1939, it originally served as a cinema and has gone through several name changes over the years. Today, it functions as an event space and also screens second-run films and participates in film festivals. Its blend of historic charm and modern utility makes it a unique venue in Toronto.

It is an attractive building indeed. How good that it is still there and used.

It is too bad that its existence is fragile, but it is still here. Unfortunately, between the pandemic and streaming services and weak movie production, many folks have gotten out of the habit of going to movies in person.
