I recently went to a small farmers market and found it really busy as you can see from the lineup at this booth. There was a lot of nice looking produce but I found the prices were quite high. $1.50 for a cob of corn, as an example, seems to be over the top to me. I did buy some tasty pastries though.
It is a busy time of year at the many farmers' markets that take place all over the city. The apple harvest is a big draw as well as the many types of squash and pumpkins.
I spotted this booth at the Saturday Farmers Market at the Wychwood Barns. I don't think that I have ever seen so many varieties of mushrooms before and I was lucky to get this pic when everyone had stepped away from the booth for a second as they were very busy!
This is the scene on Christie St on a Saturday beside the Wychwood Barns where the Farmers' Market takes place every Saturday morning. People come from all over by car, by bike and a lot by foot. And as you can see by the bike with training wheels in front, people of all ages come to the market!
This weekend is the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in Canada with Monday being the official day but many people have their feast on Sunday. Getting ready for the harvest meal often requires a trip to one of the many farmers markets in the city such as this one at the Wychwood Barns. You have to arrive early since the good things go fast - this pic was taken just after 8 a. m. last Saturday and the place was quite crowded.
I spotted this wonderfully painted bus at the Farmers' Market at the Wychwood Barns back in the fall. I watched it for a while to see which farmer it belonged to but had no luck. Wonderful images of hard work and comradeship decorate all the sides of the vehicle. It must be quite a sight to see going down the road!
The Wychwood Barns are not barns in the usual sense but rather they were streetcar barns where maintenance was done on our fleet of Red Rockets (aka streetcars). Located in the centre of the city the barns became redundant and the whole property was leased to Artscape which has redeveloped the site to include parkland with even a dog park and the barns have been changed into multi-use spaces such as artist studios, non-profit green houses, and community use areas. The Saturday Wychwood Barns Farmers Market will be moving inside for the winter in Nov but this past weekend all the wonderful goodies were still outside!
This Monday is Thanksgiving here so all the farmers markets are doing great business this weekend. This shot is from the Wychwood Barns market this morning and luckily the crowd thinned out for a few seconds so I could get a shot of some of the veggies available - some really exotic squash at this booth. This market is one of the best - great variety of fresh foods and delicious prepared foods too.
